about

A song lamenting the burning down of a much loved pub in the Midlands.

All proceeds from Bandcamp for this song will be set aside to donate to a rebuilding fund if that materialises - if not, it will be split between Historic England and CAMRA.

lyrics

Just outside of Dudley town there was a public house
It brought locals in and travellers from afar
Not just for the ales it sold and not just for the craic
But for this was no ordinary bar
The walls they tilted left and the windows tilted right
So the Crooked House did get its name
For two hundred and fifty years it stood through war and peace
Until the greedy profiteers they came

Like a phoenix from the ashes it will rise again once more
You developers had better watch your backs
For this crooked landmark of the Midlands, you boldly broke the law
You’d better hope that you’ve covered all your tracks
You’d better hope that the authorities
Never find out all the facts

In the year of 2023 it seemed the game was up
For a pub can’t turn a profit any more
So an application was put in to list this national treasure
But before they could even get it through the door
The Crooked House burned to the ground, oh what a mystery!
Is it coincidence that it should happen now?
It survived so much throughout the years, should we believe it’s fate?
Or believe that for this land they played it foul?

When the fire brigade arrived, what should they find?
But a mound of dirt preventing their way way through
They struggled hard against the blaze, against all the odds
What more could they do?
And just as they left the demolishers arrived
And tore the remnants down just like that
How can it be permissible to act in such a way
Just to clear the path for luxury flats?

We’re calling on the mayor
Make good on your word
Don’t let them off the hook
Leave no stone unturned
